Description: This is the fourth folder of materials relating to the Donald Smith collection. At this point we are cataloging the folders and listing key names and events in the data base so researchers will have access to the information. Desert Island dated 1935 sent to box holders; key name in first article is Dr. Walter Damrosch *Fundraising letter signed by Hans Meier for the Executive Board, Mt. Desert Library Society dated June 1, 1969 and addressed to Mrs. Alfred Greenough of Mount Desert; letter includes a xerox copy of the proposed plan prepared by Robert W. Patterson, Architect, Somesville *"Betwixt The Hills" newsletter dated Winter 1989 *excerpt from the Bar Harbor Times dated August 13, 1981 with pictures of a few of the old hotels on Mt. Desert Island like Ocean House, Seaside Inn, Rock End House, The Newport and Rockaway Hotels *Probate Court, Hancock County document dated February 27, 1939 naming Jennie A. Smith as a benficiary in the will of Bloomfield R. Smith *2 copies of the same letter entitled "At a USAAF Airfield in Italy --Recently" which identifies Donald E. Smith Of Mount Desert, Maine as a member of the outstanding engineer battalion serving overseas; his rank was Tec. 5 *5 page handwritten letter signed by Don Smith dated Oct. 23, 1944 from Italy * 3rd copy of the letter mentioned above entitled "At a USAAF Airfield in Italy" *State of Maine Fire Service card #6638 issued to Stuart J. Smith of Somesville, Mt. Desert *document from the Selectmen's office in the town of Mount Desert dated March 8, 1954 to Donald Smith appointing him to serve as Constable with the Somesville Fire Co. *2 invitations to the Clam City Waybackers 3rd Annual Ball on January 20, 1950; one is to Mr. Fred Smith and the other to Mrs. Fred Smith *faded issue of "The Mount Desert Messenger", volume XXI, October 15, 1943; the first article is entitled 'News from the Home Front' *another issue of "The Mount Desert Messenger", volume X, November 8, 1942 which is in better shape than volume XXI *1912 pocket size calendar card with an advertisement for Antikamnia Tablets *clipping from the Bar Harbor Times dated April 3, 1980 which has a copy of an 1880s advertisement for the Mt. Desert Dramatic Company's production of "Nick of the Woods" with a social hop at the close; local talent includes J. Hamor; Ernest Kittredge, Bloom Smith, Arthur Somes, Pearl Smith, Ernest L. Hamor, Carrie Somes, Emma Harper, Olevia Parker, Shepard Richardson, J. M. Richardson, C.E. Somes, Nellie Pray and E.E. Wasgatt *typed letter dated May 13, 1945 from Italy which was sent to Mr. and Mrs. Fred P. Smith by their son Cp. Donald E. Smith who had been in service in North Africa and Italy for 2 years * empty window envelope with "Memories of Dr. Grindle" written in script on it *handwritten letter with a greeting of "Dear Brother Robt." and a typed heading of "Mendocino Bank of Commerce, Mendocino, Cal. Joshua Grindle, President.... which is signed by Joshua Grindle *excerpt from The Ellsworth American dated July 30, 1998 which is entitled "Looking Backward Religion and Politics in Surry" which mentions Dr. Robert P. Grindle of Somesville in the first paragraph *excerpt from The Ellsworth American dated July 23, 1998 which is entitled "Looking Backward Dr. Robert L. Grindle, Kingmaker"; there is reference to the 'automobile battle on MDI around 1903' *column written by Dr. R. L. Grindle of Mt. Desert entitled "Political History -II, Old Political War Horse Tells of a Hot Battle" which relates the race between candidates in Hancock County (3 copies) *column written by Dr. R. L. Grindle of Mt. Desert entitled "Hereditary Greatness, Dr. Grindle Pricks the Bubble of Ancestor Worship" dated June 22, 1925 (2 copies) *column written by Dr. R. L. Grindle of Mt. Desert entitled "A Sea Yarn, A Gale on the Cape Shore of Nova Scotia" *column written by Dr. R. L. Grindle of Mt. Desert entitled "Religion and Politics, Subjects of Lively Meetings in Surry Seventy Years Ago" *column written by Dr. R. L. Grindle of Mt.
